PEACE IN OUR TIME
April 2005 article by David Sanders
The most famous
of all handshakes
took place between
Yasser Arafat and
Yitzhak Rabin on
the White House
lawn in 1993 .
This marked the
signing of the
Oslo Accords , which were
supposed to help
put an end
to the Arab/Israeli
conflict .
What followed was the worst decade of terror in Israel’s history . The world is now waiting and watching to see what will happen next now that Arafat has passed from the world stage .There is now a new moderate Palestinian leader in Mahmoud Abbas and Israel is hoping that he will be a partner for peace. Only time will tell.
Once again the
world’s cameras were
focused on the
handshake between Abbas
and Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon as
they gripped hands
for some time , as
photographers sought to
freeze the image
in history while
the leaders were
all smiles . Then they declared a ceasefire. Abbas
declared an end
to the intifada - the Palestinian
war on terror,
and Sharon suspended
army operations aimed
at tracking down
terrorists and bomb
factories .
“The calm that will prevail in our lands starting from today is the beginning of a new era,” Abbas said “A new opportunity for peace is born today . Let us pledge to protect it.” Sharon replied by saying , “ I assure you that we have a genuine intention to respect your rights to live independently and in dignity .” British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said there seems to be a new determination for peace , but he noted that “there have been too many false dawns over the last 60 years.” Is this going to be a new era or another false dawn ?
This Arab/Israeli conflict
is 4000 years
old and history
is telling us
that this conflict
will not be
resolved by the
politicians but by
the intervention of
God in sending
back his only
begotten Son Jesus
Christ . The Psalmist
tells us that
we should “Pray for the
peace of Jerusalem; They shall
prosper that love
thee.” The key
City is Jerusalem
and the prophet
Zechariah tells us that
it will become
“ a burdensome stone
for ALL people: all
that burden themselves
with it shall
be cut in pieces,
though all the
people of the
earth be gathered
together against it .” History
again supports this statement.
Zechariah again - “ For I will
gather all nations
against Jerusalem to
battle”.
We
are about to
witness as the
Prophet Daniel says “ a time of
trouble, such as never
was since there
was a nation
even to that
same time...”
God is telling us
through his word
there is trouble
ahead . What are we going to do
about it? The world is falling apart on
all fronts. The Bible
speaks of this
extensively as it
says we are living in
the last days .
There is
a new era
and a new
dawn about to
take place in
the very near
future when God
will set up
His Kingdom on
this earth under
the rule of
His Son. Time
is running out;
don’t miss this
opportunity of being
a part of
this golden age
which is dawning.
Jesus led the
way by being
baptised as an
example for us
to follow, that we may be
saved by God’s grace.
